National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Tom Reynolds (N.Y.) issued a statement Saturday in which he said that he had informed Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) of allegations of improper contacts between then-Rep. Mark Foley (R-Fla.) and at least one former male page, contradicting earlier statements from Hastert.
GOP sources said Reynolds told Hastert earlier in 2006, shortly after the February GOP leadership elections. Hastert's response to Reynolds' warning remains unclear.
Hastert's staff insisted Friday night that he was not told of the Foley allegations and are scrambling to respond to Reynolds' statement.
In another time Hastert's nose would be twice the length of . . . gosh, fill it in yourself: John Holmes' whatsa? Shaq's feet? The field the Packers play on? The Donald's yacht? This guy is one of the leaders of the "moral majority?" The same group of shriekers who are so down on gays and gay marriage and -- presumably -- pedophilia, too?
Why is it that their first inclination is to lie? OK, ok, "cover up?" "Spin?" I don't think "spin" really does it, but heck, Powell spun up the UN and the US pretty good. A digression, sorry. Anyway, why do they lie immediately? There are hundreds of those guys up there -- 535 or some number like that -- a few are going to be loonies and a few are going to like to cuddle up to young pages! They can't all just be ethically-challenged, amoral thieves?
Give 'em a little room to be human, Mr. Hastert. Even a dog doesn't try to cover up everything.
